Water Play for a Hot Day!

Today the forecast is for 101 degrees Fahrenheit!

I do believe you could probably fry an egg on the sidewalk! 

 So, when the age old "I'm bored" bounces from the walls, here is a water play activity to try.

 

Have fun! 

 

It's hot, the sun is blazing and you can't make it to the pool. 

You don't have a sprinkler, so what can you do to cool off?

Grab an empty, clean dish detergent bottle.  Fill it with water and head to the sidewalk.

Water art is fun for the older child and

just squirting water all over the place is fun for the littlest child. 

This is a fun way to "paint" pictures on the side of the house too.  

Predict how long it will take for your creations to evaporate.  Which piece of "art" lasts the longest?

Let your school -age children research the properties of evaporation. 

What other experiments can you do with this concept?

Another way to cool off is to fill a spray bottle with water and have a water mist "fight"!

Don't forget the sunscreen!

Water Painting

It is 84 degrees today.

The sun is shining  brightly, the trees are starting to turn and

there is a wonderful smell of expectancy in the air.

The crops in the fields have turned beautiful shades of brown resulting in

a flurry of activity as harvest begins.  It is a perfect Fall day!

Most pools have been closed for the season.

But, there is one thing for sure:

Kids + Water = Fun!

For a quick, easy activity on a bright sunny day try

Water Painting!

It will be sure to result in creative excitement.

 

Materials needed:

 

-a container of water

-a clean, soft paint brush

-a surface to "paint":  cement (sidewalk or driveway), siding (the side of the house), the side of the car or the boards on your deck.

 

All ages can enjoy this activity. 

From the littlest child painting in all directions, to older children writing letters  and their name to more complex pictures.for the advanced "artist"

 

Have fun watching your creations evaporate. 

How long does it take?  Does it evaporate faster in the sun or the shade?

 

No mess, wetness that dries and no worries... just tons of fun!

Water Balloons!

The sun is blazing, it is hot outside. 

The kids are bored and it is too hot to think about doing anything! 

Now is the PERFECT time to pull out a bag of balloons,

 put on your swim suits

and have a family water fight! 

Recently, I volunteered for Vacation Bible School. The first couple of days during game time, I dutifully stood guarding the sidelines. Then on Wednesday the temperatures were in the hot 90's and the station leader pulled out water balloons and squirt guns. Well, all inhibition fell off at the sight of this refreshing activity. From that point on, this time of the day was a highlight. As the kids and I played we had so much fun (and there was a 50 year age difference between my students and myself!) Relationships were strengthened through this time of playing. So, throw inhibition to the wind, and PLAY with your kids. You won't regret it!

P.S.  Two weeks passed and I ran into one of the little boys from my class.  In the past he had always been shy and reluctantly, but respectfully, answered any question I asked.  But on this encounter he was eager to tell me all about the movie he was going to see and he invited me to see it too.  It was a wonderful conversation.  I am positive this change was due to our play time with water guns during VBS.  Playing with your kids opens all types of doors to communication!
