The Wonderful World of Birds
Does it really matter what age you are? Bird watching is fun, no matter if you are 3 years or 93 years old.
I sat this morning and watched the activity around the window bird feeder. It is no wonder that it is a favorite spot for the loved ones, of all ages, in my life.
The mighty oak in the center of the back yard acts as the main "terminal". At times it is filled with color and activity. The tiny birch tree is the "landing strip" where the next bird allowed into the feeder waits their turn. Dozens of birds in all shapes, colors and sizes take turns zooming in for a landing to scoop up their next meal.
It amazes me at the pecking order. Sassy blue jays cower at the woodpecker. Cardinals are shy and don't fare well with sharing. The tiny Titmouse sneaks around the corner to grab a seed hoping to not be detected by the larger birds. Doves perch on the top using their size to butt into line. The parade of color, sizes and personalities entertain and amuse.
Some of the birds crack open their seeds in the feeder with mighty pliers like beaks. Longer skinnier beaks gobble down numerous seeds and fly off. We even had a woodpecker that tapped on the window when the feeder became empty---his rat-a-tat-tat startling the humans on the other side of the glass.
Last week a Carolina wren set up housekeeping in the pool's rolled up solar blanket that had been left on the patio! Five tiny cream colored eggs with dark brown spots were produced. Her nest filled with a soft lining woven from the donkey and goat hair found at the barn. Amazing...
The little twigs the male wren left sticking out of the door openings have been pulled in. It was discovered that our scolding little wren, who had been courting, has now established two families in different wren houses.
The hummingbirds buzz around the deck drinking nectar from the abundance of colorful flowers and fight over the feeder in their territorial style.
Never a dull moment...birds are a great and continual source of entertainment! Acquire a book or download an app. about birds and learn the habits of the birds in your backyard. Learn to identify the different songs of each bird. Put up houses and feeders. Use a pair of binoculars to get a closer look.
Enjoy the antics and brilliant colors that birds can provide. Introduce the joys of bird watching to your children today! What a great family activity and a potential lifelong interest/hobby.

Memorial Day
Picnics, swimming, cook-outs, hot dogs, hamburgers, camping...a three day weekend of family fun. We look forward to this for weeks. These are all favorites for the holiday that announces that summer has arrived.
Family fun should be a priority and this is good. But, have you stopped to think about the true meaning of Memorial Day? It is important to remember why we have this holiday and to teach our children. Children need to know how to show respect for their country and to the people who have died for their freedom. The freedom to worship on Sunday mornings without fear, the freedom to go to school, the freedom to express our thoughts in public, the freedom to walk down the street, the freedom to study and become whatever we want , the freedom to do so many things without fear of persecution.
FREEDOM! it is not free, although we personally didn't have to pay for it. Somewhere, somehow, a brave soldier paid the price for our freedom.
Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day, and is a remembrance for those who have died, giving the ultimate sacrifice, in our nation's service. For those men and women who gave their lives so that we could live in freedom.
I read a story about someone who was going to buy a bunch of carnations. They were going to go to the cemetery and walk through the section for soldiers and leave a flower on each grave that had no flowers. They were going to pray for our country and all who serve or have served, for their families for the disabled veterans and for anyone who was still held in captivity. They were going to remember.
Charlie Gragg from Penryn, CA wrote a poem entitled, Our Gift to the Fallen in 2007.
"For each soldier that has fallen so that many may stand
We honor their spirit as they pass to God's hand
For without their sacrifice we would live forever in fear
We pray for their loved ones and provide a salute and a tear
That is our gift to our fallen heroes that are amongst us no more."
My neighbor lines his property with flags on Memorial and Veterans day. Another flies the U.S. flag at half staff until noon. It is a nice reminder. I'm going to go out and hang patriotic buntings on my deck railing. And, then we will stop the festivities for a moment and remember...

I remember as a child each Memorial Day filling the car with carefully selected wreaths for members of my family. We would drive to several cemeteries and decorate the graves of those who had gone before us. My mother proudly displayed the flag. Memorial Day was a day of reflection, reverence and respect. My grandfather served in WWI, two of my uncles in the Korean War.

Color Explosion!
Flowers, Flowers everywhere...A rainbow greets your eyes as you look out the window! What a feast for the senses. There are many activities you can create with the flowers in your life.
What is each flower's name? How many different kinds of flowers are in the yard/park/neighborhood?
How are the flowers alike? Different? What shapes and colors do you find? How many yellow or red or purple flowers can you find? Are all the leaves the same? Are all the flowers the same height? Do all the flowers smell the same? Which flowers do the bees and hummingbirds seem to like the best? Take a photograph of your favorite flowers. Use a sketch pad to draw flowers. Dry or press a flower and use it in a craft.
Older children can research the names and functions of the different parts of a flower. Investigate using a magnifying glass to take a closer look.
Pick a bouquet of flowers for that special someone or to brighten up the kitchen table.
What other ideas can you think of?

Abracadabra!
Imagine the surprise on your little one's face when they see their reflection on one side of a large metal spoon right side up; and, then "you" make them turn upside down on the other side of the spoon! It is also fun to make silly faces in your reflection of a metal spoon, just like a mirror.
It is really all about convex and concave surfaces, but to your child it seems like magic.
Your older kids may enjoy researching why convex and concave surfaces change your reflection.
Who would have thought a simple spoon could be so much fun?
So, throw in a little meal time entertainment and amaze your kids!

Effective Communication
I have saved this cartoon for years because I just love the message! How many times have we been guilty of saying, "mmm", "ahh", "ohh", etc. when someone we love tries to tell us something? Effective communication takes time and active listening. It requires listening with your eyes, as well as your ears. It requires listening without flipping through I-phones, watching TV or reading
e-mail. It requires talking to, not at, our family. So, take the challenge. Turn off the "electronic guests" in the room and really connect with your family. Start building deeper, stronger family relationships. You will love how it makes you feel!

The Importance of Family Time
We know we should spend time with our family and they should be a top priority. Why is it then that work and other responsibilities frequently squeeze out that valuable time together? Charles Hummel said, "Our greatest danger in life is in permitting the urgent things to crowd out the important". Below is a link that talks about the value of taking a time-out with your family. It is a part of the Family Time sermon series by Dave Armstrong from First Christian Church in Washington, Missouri.

Outdoor Fun
What a perfect day for a family walk or bicycle ride! Not too hot, not too cold or windy... just right! Be sure to turn off your "electronic guests" during these special minutes. It is during a bicycle walk or ride that communication opens up, family relationships are strengthened and you make wonderful memories. It is amazing what you can see from a bike or walking that is missed in a hurried car ride. Laugh, talk, smile and enjoy!

Cloud Pictures
Take a family "time-out"!
When the sky fills up with big, puffy clouds bordered by the most gorgeous blue, pull out the lawn chairs or lay on a blanket searching the clouds for pictures. Can you convince someone else of the picture you see? Does everyone see the same things? I see a heart. Do you?
A smile a day...
Open the lines of communication and strengthen relationships...make eye contact and SMILE.
You can just feel your heart melt!

Evening Activity
A great evening family activity is to sit outside and stargaze.
Check out the I-Phone app "starlight". Hold it up to the sky. It finds where you are and shows you the stars, constellations and planets. Way too cool!
